Process

Through a probing stage we conducted, we observed that people act out hand gestures, body language, and even dubbing voice for reminiscing. Moreover, people tend to reshape a certain memorial or reconstruct a certain scene while reminiscing. However, despite the richness of interaction we act out naturally while recalling memory, the interaction how we evoke memory on present digital devices contains rarely emotional triggers related to the memory itself. All different memories are retrieved exactly with the pre-determinate manipulation of a device, which is merely unrelated to the experience itself.

Design

Wishegg is an interactive tabletop device that aims at encouraging people to reminisce their memories through natural hand gestures and enriching the dimension of interaction while reminiscing. Wishegg remembers the palm print how users hold Wishegg while recording a piece of memory. Then, the palm print patterns will randomly show up on Wishegg as a hint of retrieval. For retrieving and reminiscing memory, users have to perform the same hand gesture as they were recording. Therefore, while retrieving the memory, not only the sounds play out by Wishegg, but the picture they imagine in their mind, as well as the bodily interaction with Wishegg would emerge as how they recorded. This constructive design research allows us to articulate that the rich expression of our body movement is a significant design resource for evocation of memory. It appears that people would reminisce vividly with their embodied knowledge beyond functional manipulation of a device. Reminiscence with digital technology would be a pleasurable experience while people interact with their natural gestures in the process of meaning-making.
